The emergence of China as a global superpower is arguably the single most important issue in research on international relations today and for the foreseeable future. With China’s role in international trade, global economic tensions, and territorial disputes increasing markedly, Japan-China relations, including Japan-Taiwan relations, have played, and will continue to play, a central role in global economic and political relations. As one of the U.S.’ closest political allies and a closely connected neighbor to China, Japan is a critical part of any discussion of the role of China in the world.
